Course Structure

In Flute Progressions, focus is placed on more advanced ornamentation: the crann, the short roll and the bounce. Phrasing and breathing also feature as well as the use of the G# key. It is not a prerequisite to have a keyed flute for this course; in the occasional instance where a key is used, the tutor presents alternative melodic ‘turns’ for those with keyless flutes.

The traditional Irish tunes and corresponding techniques taught are:

  • Micho Russell’s (Ornamentation: Strengthening the G Roll)
  • Paddy Mill’s Fancy (Breathing and Phrasing)
  • John Blessing’s Reel (Intonation)
  • The Gallowglass (Ornamentation: The Roll on A)
  • Siobhan O’Donnell’s (Ornamentation: The Roll on B, and C ♮taps)
  • The Derry Horpipe (Intonation)
  • The Blarney Pilgrim (Ornamentation: Cranns)
  • Pat Over The Hill (Ornamentation: Long and Short Cranns)
  • The Dusty Millar (Ornamentation: Cranns)
  • McFadden’s Handsome Daughter (Challenging Keys: ‘A’ Major)
  • The Kilmovee Jig (Breathing and Phrasing)
  • The Ashplant (Ornamentation: The Roll on E. Intonation)
  • The Scent Of The Bog (Ornamentation: The Bounce)
